bp – new leadership for a challenging future

BP p.l.c. (bp) announced that it has appointed Ian Tyler as Chair of the company following an extensive search process, including both internal and external candidates. He will assume the role immediately.

Ian joined the bp Board as a non-executive director in April 2025 and was appointed Interim Chair on 26 May 2026. He has worked alongside more than 15 chief executives during his extensive non-executive career spanning listed and private companies across oil and gas, natural resources and engineering businesses. These qualities have been evident during his time as Interim Chair, where he has secured the confidence of the board and executive management through his considered leadership, judgement and integrity.

Meg O’Neill (Marguerite Eleen O’Neill) was appointed chief executive officer on 1 April 2026. She is he first woman in bp’ history in the position of a chief executive officer. Before, Meg spent  23 years with ExxonMobil in a variety of technical, operational and senior leadership roles in Houston, New Orleans, Canada, Indonesia und Norway, has a bachelor’s degree in chemical and ocean engineering and a master’s in ocean system management from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the US.

Golf of Amercia – bp welcomes Shell into exploration prospects

Bp and shell have agreed terms to a 30% stake in five leases containing the Conifer exploration prospect in the deep-water Gulf of America and to a 50% stake in the Tapinoma exploration block in the Santos Basin, offshore Brazil. The transaction support bp’s disciplined approach to capital allocation in service of becoming a simpler, stronger, more valuable company.

Gordon Birrel, EVP Upstream, says, that the Golf of America and Brazil are important regions for bp, and bringing together two experienced operators can help unlock the potential of both opportunities. And this collaboration, will help strengthen our position in both as we progress exploration activity “.
